Dawn Tan
Programme Coordinator

Dawn's passion in outdoor adventure began when she joined the scout unit, Ventures & Rovers, in Hwa Chong Junior College. Thereafter, fresh-faced and eager to share her experiences, she embarked on a long-standing stint as a freelance outdoor trainer. Volunteering with the Singapore Scout Association (SSA), she served the Sarimbun Camp Adventure Activities Team (SCAAT) in various capacities, as instructor for the Rockwall, the Team Challenge Pyramid, and the Low Ropes Course. Mindful of safety procedures and risk management, she was subsequently appointed as secretary for SCAAT's executive committee, where she coordinated and assisted training programmes for SCAAT's external instructors.

Dawn graduated from the National University of Singapore in 2000 with a Degree of Bachelor of Science (Computer and Information Science). Succumbing to mounting societal pressure, she entered the corporate world in 2001, working as a systems analyst in an MNC. Even then, through the course of her work, she honed her people management skills, working with various business units in the region and enlarged her skill sets, attending such courses as Service Excellence and Fire Safety Awareness with the Civil Defence Academy.

Nonetheless, irrevocably hooked to adventure learning, Dawn continually fortified her technical competencies by attending training and certification programmes by Wilderness Pursuit Achievement. She successfully acquired the Abseiling Instructor (Level 2) and Rockwall Climbing Instructor certifications in 1999 and 2003 respectively. Additionally, she complimented her repertoire with a first aid license from the Red Cross Training Centre in 2000 and more recently, trained to be an Emergency First Responder.

With a positive outlook, patient and perceptive facilitation, she motivates her charges to step away from their comfort zones, overcome perceived limitations, bringing out the best in them. Encouraged by the results she had seen and the potential of experiential learning, she left the rat race and is now pursuing a degree in Psychology.

Joyce Fam
Programme Coordinator

Once a below average student, Joyce used strategies that she shares with us today as a trainer, to catapult herself to become one of the top few students at her respective secondary levels and one of the few students who made it to the polytechnic from her graduating class at Dunman Secondary where she was already showing leadership promise!

It wasn’t until Joyce’s polytechnic light years that she was introduced to the raw experiences of outdoor adventure. Having been actively involved in Rock Climbing competitively, her curiosity and passion for outdoor adventure grew beyond her basic means of being just a participant; hence she decided to pursue this interest by joining the adventure learning club of the Republic Polytechnic and she was also given the opportunity to be elected as one of the executive committee members.

Joyce is also an avid kayaker and trekker. Her interest for outdoor adventure didn’t end there. She further challenged herself to experience new things beyond her own limits and at new heights. Hence it wasn’t long before she pursued training in Abseiling, now the proficiency course Level 1 & 2, Sport Climbing Level 1, Kayaking Star 1, and the Ministry of Education Certified External Freelance Instructor Programme.

She was also actively involved in service learning expeditions to Cambodia and Thailand, with her experience in outdoor adventure, she and her team members incorporated the elements of outdoor adventure as a critical means of service learning.

Her enthusiasm for outdoor adventure soon became a form of a learning process which she has been eagerly sharing with students today. However, she is not stopping there just yet, as the night is young and one is never too old to learn.
